Chorus Ltd announced today that after an extensive tendering process, it has awarded a major broadband network connection contract to Universal Communications Group Ltd (UCG).
Previously reported in January 2017, the New Zealand government agency Crown Fibre Holdings, had awarded the majority of the second stage (UFB2) of the national ultrafast broadband fibre network rollout to Chorus. This new contract, known as UFB2 Connect Services, involves UCG connecting up to 203,000 homes and businesses in 169 provincial towns throughout New Zealand. UCG will also be entering new UFB1 areas to provide connect services for premises in Rotorua, Taupo, Whakatane, Nelson and Blenheim.
UCG’s three-year contract is valued at just under $NZD75 million and preliminary activities will commence in late September.
UCG Chairman, Professor Iain Morrison said “I am extremely pleased with the progress UCG has made in working with Chorus since our initial contract was signed in 2014. We believe there is a very good cultural fit between the two organisations and that view is vindicated today”.
UCG CEO Rafael Luna added “The real reason I believe UCG was awarded the contract was all the hard work my team has done in the past three years supporting Chorus. I am extremely satisfied with the hard work, dedication and innovation the New Zealand team have shown. We look forward to working closely with Chorus on this project and realise that by its nature, it will present some logistical challenges. However, over the past three years the two organisations have worked very well together and we see this partnership continuing”.

It is an event where Chorus recognises the excellence of a number of front-line people across its four service companies (UCG, Visionstream, Broadspectrum and Downer). This was the first time UCG attended, and we were very well received by our peers and customer. UCG’s Consents Team were recognised by Chorus as the TEAM OF THE YEAR. We see this as an awesome recognition and our team as well-deserved inaugural winners of this award. Chorus’ Mark Mayerhofler, who works closely with UCG’s Consents Team, stated “…very well deserved recognition, we are all really proud of your achievement here.”
UCG nominated Cellwatch as our delivery partner team of the year for service excellence which was endorsed by Chorus and presented as part of their awards. Amando Tanquintic accepted the award on behalf of Cellwatch.
It is always great to celebrate excellence and success, and look forward to ensuring more celebration at next year’s awards.
